When selecting a teacher education program, ensure you pick one that offers a specialization in French education, if available. This specialized training will help you build the skills you need to teach French effectively.

To become a certified teacher in British Columbia, you need to be fluent in both French and English. You can take a standardized language proficiency test, such as TEF, DELF (for French), IELTS, and TOEFL (for English) to verify your fluency.

Aspiring French teachers must undergo a comprehensive certification process in British Columbia, which includes the following steps:

  • Criminal Record Check: A mandatory criminal record check is conducted to ensure that you are eligible to work with children.
  • Student Teaching Practicum: During your teacher education program, you will participate in a supervised student teaching practicum. This practical classroom experience is conducted under the guidance and supervision of an experienced teacher.
  • Teacher Certification Application: Upon successful completion of your teacher education program and meeting the other requisites, you can apply for teacher certification. This application is submitted to the Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB) of the British Columbia Ministry of Education. Teacher certification is an essential requirement for teaching in the province, and it opens the door to your career as a French teacher in British Columbia.
